Steps

Social Security Disability and/ or SSI benefit applications can be done at your local Social Security Office in your State. Some states have more than one Social Security office. Anyone who is salaried and has plans of getting work at any time in his life can apply for disability benefits.

There are three ways in which you as a potential claimant can apply for disability:
1. Online disability application
2. Phone the local Social Security Office and set up an appointment to apply for disability
3. Show up at the local Social Security Office without an appointment and apply for disability

The most advisable of the three would be making a phone call and booking an appointment. Making an online application would leave so many things that could be essential during claims. Plus you may want to ask many questions about the claims. Showing up without an appointment could have you wait in line for hours on end. Thus a planned face-to-face meeting for an application will have both parties prepared for it, and makes the whole process seem easy and uncomplicated compared to using the other two options.

Interview

Once the appointment has been made, an interview of the claimant is scheduled, either at the local office where he/she is interviewed in person or over the phone. This allows the applicant the privacy and comfort of having to answer to any of the questions without intimidation. He/she gets to sit and speak in a location of their choice and offer to disclose whatever information that is required. After the interview, they may be required to sign papers for approval and this would be made easier if they scheduled an appointment for that specific task. These are the only known methods of applying for the benefits and anyone can do so regardless of your medical conditions.
