Underestimating the speed a cyclist travels at leads to common accidents
You must not pass within 3 feet of a cyclist
There are a number of common ways in which accidents occur between drivers of a motor vehicle and a cyclist.
One such common accident is when both car and cyclist are turning right the vehicle driver underestimates the speed the cyclist will travel when making the turn and collides with the cyclist on the turn. You should slow down and wait for the cyclist to make the turn and be clear of your path before you make the turn in the car.
When cycle lanes merge with the road way or when there is an intersection with a continuing cycle lane, drivers should check their mirrors and blind spots carefully before merging with the cycle lane or making a right hand turn.
When pulling out at an intersection with a crossing cycle lane, check carefully that no cyclists are approaching the intersection. Right of way should be given to the cyclist, the same as you would give an approaching car and remember that cyclist often move quicker than car drivers’ expect.
If you are driving a car and intend to turn left into the path of an oncoming cyclist, you are obliged by law not to pass within three feet of the cyclist.
Whenever you are parked on the side of oncoming traffic, check there are no cyclists coming before you open your car door. A common and often deadly incident can be when a motorist fails to look before opening the door, knocking the cyclist off his or her bike and into the path of oncoming traffic.
It should be remembered that if you pass a cyclist too close and have the intent of intimidating the cyclist this is classed as assault. If you drive too close to a cyclist at high speed you could be found guilt of reckless endangerment.
Car drivers and cyclists have to share the roads and should make sure they respect each other and obey traffic control devices and road regulations.
